a quick story
MY LEGACY
I was born with the name Gretchen Elizabeth. Growing up in Michigan, I was deeply influenced by my parents' work in the civil rights movement. Our home was often filled with the energy of meetings, and my parents' friends would affectionately call me "Little Gretchen."
One day, my parents took me to an event focused on Africa. That experience stirred something in me, and afterward, I asked my parents if I could have an African name. They said yes — and with their blessing, at just six years old, I legally changed my name to Bukeka Bosede. I started first grade as Bukeka.
In Xhosa, a South African language, Bukeka means "the most beautiful thing you've ever seen."
As I grew older, people would often ask me about my name. After sharing the story dozens — and now hundreds — of times, I realized something powerful: even as a young girl, I knew how to make a bold choice for myself. I understood, even then, that I am an inspiration — not only to others, but also to myself.
This is my legacy. I can make an impact in the world, and so can you!
